The PowerShot S40 and S30 are as similar as two peas in a pod. They are indeed identical cameras except for their sensors. The S30 has a resolution of 3.3 MP, while the S40 has 4 MP. Both sensors are from Sony and have the same dimensions, allowing them to be integrated into cameras of the same size and features.
Both cameras were released in late 2001, just a few weeks apart.
They feature a sliding cover to protect the lens. This type of camera would soon disappear from digital cameras in favor of a cap that opens electrically. In these models, it is the manual sliding of the cover that powers the camera on.
There is another difference related to the sensor's resolution: the burst shooting speed. The S40's is lower (2.5 fps) than the S30's (3 fps), as the S40 model has more digital data to process. The S40's sensitivity is limited to 400 ISO, likely because the 4 MP sensor produced too much noise.
